Maybe you're not aware of it, but, if you are (or if you've ever been) subscribed to Jubilee's "digital club", you should have received by now the email mentioned in that post from last week on jubilee.la :

Jubilee's "members-only" record is finished, and we want to make sure it lands into the right hands - YOURS, that is, if you subscribed to Jubilee's "yearly membership" in 2008 or 2009.

We've been writing to all the past and present subscribers through the email addresses provided to Topspin. But if you haven't received instructions as to how to get your record (or if you can't access the email address associated with your Topspin account anymore, etc.), please contact us directly at jubilee.vinyl@gmail.com and we'll find a way.

..this time under the pen of no one else but Aaron himself, through a myspace blog : before Jubilee and Birthday Twin, Julianna Barwick will be opening, with Kevin Fitzgerald djing between the sets.

Meanwhile, things are getting a bit more defined too for the december 2nd show, where Jubilee will be sharing the stage with Seaspin, Little Girls and Woah Hunx, and for Jubilee's recently launched web-store where enough merch has been added to set up a whole winter wardrobe. Lots happening in Jubilee world indeed, so if you want to keep track it all, time for you webizens, bird-whisperers and global villagers of all kinds to add Jubilee's twitter or facebook profiles to your contact lists !

Some more news have appeared about Jubilee's show on november 17th at the Silverlake Lounge - this time through a blog on Birthday Twin/Fred Sablan's myspace :

Well it's been forever.
Birthday Twin will be playing Nov. 17th opening for Jubilee.
I've been wanting to play a show for a while, but a million ideas and projects and busy work got in the way. And I'm getting ready for more Goon Moon.
Recording full songs took a backseat to hundreds of fragmented ideas recorded for future use. Hopefully, I'll pull them together soon and release something.

SO...now a show. Aaron North asked if I'd want to play and I couldn't say no. I'm honored.

The band lineup for this show will be:

I feel lucky to have these two join me for a show. This will be a very live show with different arrangements, sounds, chords, tempos...basically a unique moment for this show. I'd hate to just perform the recorded music as is. Feel free to record, video, photograph, whatever...this will be a musical moment that won't be repeated. Next show I do will be totally different for this exact reason.

We all know the the I-Ching isn't exactly picky when it comes to figures, considering it'll rather be a full year than a full week since Jubilee played their last live gigs. But set your calendars and clocks, and consider yourself booked on the nights of november 17 and december 2, if you want to see Jubilee's new lineup in action. Together with Aaron and Troy are now Jenni Tarma and Tony Bevilacqua, now set to grace the boards of the Silverlake Lounge and The Fold in Bordello.. Easter everywhere - Jubilee's back with live tracks and rarities

If you're a member of Jubilee's "digital club" on Tospin, you can now go on a (somewhat) belated Easter egg hunt in your mailbox.. if you're a thorough searcher, you'll find three live tracks, recorded at Auntie Annie's in Belfast in autumn 2008, a bunch of pictures, including a handful of live shots to give everyone an idea what a Jubilee concert looks like, and the two tracks "Androgynous" and "Someone's Coming" (which are kinda rare.. nah.. pretty rare actually, cause they were the "vinyl only" b-sides and we all know how tricky these are to get a hand upon.) And one of the live tracks "Make You Crumble" had not even been released before today.

And together with the live tracks, the vinyl b-sides and artwork, and the concert shots, you'll also find an extended missive from Aaron's hand, with some explanations about the past and some plans for the future. Don't know about you, but WE are excited !

Oh, and something we've got to spread for the sake of good journalism : turns out that THE good address to send questions, problems, suggestions etc. regarding anything digital or membership-related is jubilee.web@gmail.com. Just thought we'd pass on the word.

..and god knows it was a long cold boring winter. We promised it and now it's done : we caught the first rays of sun to take pictures of all the Jubilee releases flying around here, and uploaded them to our media section, including the notorious, but seldom seen, "In With The Out Crowd" red vinyl. Fetching, aye ?

And.. since one sparrow never comes alone - the jubilee.la site is back up and running, too (if it still doesn't work, do yourself a favor and clear your browser cache .) Now, if THAT's not a good omen, with the myspace blog of the other day..

If your memory serves you well.. last time you heard of Jubilee was in december 2008, and maybe you had given up hope a bit (we hadn't) ? But now there's a big fat silver lining on the horizon. Apparently Aaron had to overcome all sorts of human and inhuman obstacles and injustices - BUT Jubilee's back.. with a vengeance.. and their arms full of gifts. If you are signed to Jubilee's Topspin Digital Club (somewhat still buried, but accessible here, as we posted), that is. So.. there'll be the full length album (now tentatively called "After The Crash"), digital versions of the vinyl b-sides (The Replacements' "Androgynous", and The Who's "Someone's Coming"), live tracks from last autumn's UK tour, the 7-inch vinyl, AND on top of all these, Jubilee locked themselves up in their mouldy post-flood studio to record a collection of unexpected covers from stoned germans to Stone Roses (Shabbey Road's very own "Basement Tapes" sessions, kinda..)

To make it faster getting a hand on images, videos, etc., instead of having to scroll through the whole newsblog, we just gathered all of these in a new "media" section, which you can find here. We'll also put up photos of the Jubilee releases in there, but we'll have to catch a couple rays of sunlight for that, not an easy task these days.

Also, we've been organizing the interviews and the archives in their own sections, which can now be accessed (as well as the media) through the three new buttons up there. Over time, we'll keep on filling these pages with more material, but this way, using the site at just got a bit easier.

You might be surprised with the sudden outburst of activity around here.. not only have we finally overcome that bitchy oversampling error that had been stalling us in the video editing department for several months, but we've also regained fully functional dual-core processors, and are now able to resume posting our series of interviews with the Jubilee folks. Tonight, we're setting sail with the ridiculously modest Troy Petrey, who's been drumming alongside Aaron not only in Jubilee, but since way back in the days of the Icarus Line, and who knows like no one how to make a sea-crossing fly by. ..but you just can't kill this song. We're sort of proud of this little video, because the lighting and everything gives it a nice atmosphere, and the sound turned out really sharp, especially for an outdoors event. If you pay attention, you can clearly distinguish the complexity of Jeff's and Aaron's guitar lines intertwining.. Not wanting to pat ourselves on the shoulder, but our favourite moments in there are probably the close-up on Aaron's scraping at the end of the intro at 1:18 and Mike's bass outburst at 4:09, so be sure to pay attention.. and crank-up the speakers and turn on the HD as always.

And then, keep in mind that what you see here is Jubilee with all sorts of odds against them. We edited it out to keep the file smaller, but Aaron prefaced the song by telling the story of how he ran out of gas on the way, got rescued at the last minute, but only to notice that his rig wasn't working anymore. But given the mood and the theme of the song, maybe is it what gave Bayonet its special edge that day. So, enjoy..

Admittedly, no one in the Jubilee universe is suffering from information overflow these days.. but that doesn't mean that you can't, at least, fill the painful gaps in your record collection. And indeed "Rob" (hi Rob) wrote in to spread the news
of his ebay auctions concerning the "In With The Out Crowd" (blue edition) and the "Rebel Hiss" 7-inch vinyl singles - the starting price is a bit speculative, but seems to be in the range of what the market dictates,
if you look at this other new auction.

At this point we would want to point out that we're neither the sellers, nor plan to bid on any of the vinyls, nor are in any way benefitting from these auctions - we're merely bringing them to your attention when we happen to be made aware of them, cause we figure some of you out there might still be looking for them records. So, no business interest of ours.

On the contrary, we even have something good to give away for free at this point. Long story short.. a few months ago, we wanted to get our hands on some Spectrum material, and left the record shop with twice the "Live Chronicles Vol. 1" instead of volume 1 AND 2.. Having travelled back home, we got aware of the situation, and music shop guy offerred to correct it by sending us volume 2, provided we'd give back volume 1 as soon as we'd be in town. Which just happened these days, but only for us to grimly get aware the shop had closed and gone bankrupt, with no chance for us to give back what we owed.. and that would be bad karma. So we're trying to find the "Spectrum Live Chronicles, Volume 1, Tokyo Edition" a caring home, and hope that someone out there can help, and that could be you. The only requirement is for you to give us your address (so we can ship the cd, duh !) and to prove you have some actual interest in Spectrum's music by answering this simple question : which is the title of the song that, more than twenty years ago, was half-written by one third of Spectrum and then gloriously covered by one half of Jubilee ? There you go, in case you doubted the Jubilee relevance of all of this. Christmas never whispers - Buddyhead Ho Ho Hodeo, Hotel Cafe, L.A., 21st of december 2008

Christmas never whispers

Sorry we're THAT late with this review.. but maybe you can empathize with people who've just been hauling down by hand one ton of cement and gravel into eighteenth century underground prison cells.. anyway, here we go. Another christmas is over, behind and done with ! The most dangerous time of the year. But if you avoided rupturing your gallbladder, were spared third degree burns, managed to eat without suffocating on weird little fragments of poultry bones, and are still with us, then there's a little more seasonal digesting to be done: Buddyhead's christmas Ho-ho-hodeo - or at least a crossreaders digest, since we weren't represented at the event in flesh, but were there in spirit all the more !!

So.. to wrap up the event from a Jubilee relevant perspective.. One of the first bands hitting the stage of The Hotel Cafe on the 21st of december was Brandon Interlocutor and the Sherrifs, err.. Interlocator, Interrogator.. no.. Intelligator - something linguistic anyway. It was their first live show ever and featured Jeff Lynn and Michael Harris on guitar.

Then there were too many performances to recount, in all sorts of styles, genres and fields : Tsk Tsk, Nick Jago (backed by HT Heartache), Dios Malos, Ryan Ritchie, Zander Schloss and Sean Wheeler, Claire Cronin, Sid Brown, Todd Congelliere, Jason Simon and Marcos Chloka (if what we read here and there was true, and not counting others we would have unintentionally forgotten.) Alain Johannes stunned everyone with a solo-acoustic-12-string-fingerstyle extravaganza crossing fluently through raga, hispanic, oriental and southwestern styles (even the clip on youtube is flabbergasting.) And Sweethead, featuring Johannes' former bandmate Troy van Leuwen played their second ever live gig and were another definite and classy highlight of the evening.

Then later, somewhere between 1am and 2am the Hotel Cafe welcomed its final performance, with Aaron North, for once going solo, or rather joining up with a circle of friends. But even after a bunch of cancellations (Josh Homme, The Duke Spirit, Wires on Fire, etc.) it seems the evening's time planning had been a bit too ambitious, so Aaron's set had to be cut short for reasons of curfew (it's L.A., hence none of that all night partying and drinking we're used to around here!) So he didn't get to play, as was apparently planned, with Alessandro Cortini or Fred Sablan, and out of the ten songs noted on the setlist, only three got performed. With Troy Petrey on drums and Tony Bevilacqua on electric (but apparently mellow) guitar supporting him, Aaron covered three songs that revisit some of Jubilee's influences. At the same time these songs lyrically hit much darker tones than Jubilee had ever aspired to, all written as they are from the desolation row where all hopes and dreams come to an end - love (The Stone Roses' "Sally Cinnamon"), happiness ("Acetone" by Mudhoney) or even life itself (Pavement's "Here".)

So, all in all, it must have been a heartwarming event, although unfortunately with too little time for too much music.. but there's always christmas 2009, and a new year has just begun..

Auction time again - "In WIth The Out Crowd" single cds and vinyls on ebay

You probably know what it's like.. you check ebay looking for more torque power or musing over some japanese precision echo, then your mind goes wandering, ADD does the rest, and you stumble across a fresh well of "In With The Out Crowd" singles. So, since these little jewels are not that easy to come by these days (especially in some parts of the world), and the seller says he'll ship worldwide, here's a slightly oblique chance to get your hands on Jubilee's latest release, in cd or 7-inch form. Plus, the latter happens to be #106, which, even if it's neither odd nor prime, is made of the figures of Syd Barrett's birth date, and is a bloody low number in the blue/white edition of the record, given that the first hundred have been pressed on red/transparent vinyl. The auction ends in two days, and how do people always say over there.. happy bidding !

So, it turns out we're a reliable source of information after all, because the Buddyhead all-acoustic festivities, set for the 21st of december at the Hotel Cafe, and that we were writing about a couple weeks ago got confirmed in the meantime by BH HQ, Jubilee's myspace , etc. The detail of the whole shindig can be found on the Hotel Cafe website - one christmas miracle is already that tickets are STILL available. Because, let's face it, Reading or Coachella would be proud if they could gather such an ear-watering lineup.. with the way things are going who knows who will not be there !? Well, not yet, but the spirit sure is in the air, as news of the 2008 edition of the annual Buddyhead Christmas Party start to seep all over The Googles. To quote The Scenestar :

"Buddyhead will have its XMAS Party at the Hotel Cafe on Dec. 21, and already confirmed to perform special acoustic sets are Scenestar favorites The Duke Spirit and Nick Jago (formerly of BRMC)."

Which is already a killer line-up, and kinda Jubilee related (if only for Nick Jago's contribution to Jubilee's "Jenny Artichoke"), but even more so if you check the december program of the Hotel Cafe, which, for the 21st of december, lists : "Buddyhead Xmas Party ! with acoustic sets from The Duke Spirit / Aaron North (Jubilee) / Nick Jago (BRMC) and many more! Full Line Up TBA"

Please note that none of this is confirmed of now IN ANY WAY by Jubilee or by the 'Head, but you might want to keep that evening free to sit on Santa's lap and raise a cup of eggnog or two to the first birthday of the "Rebel Hiss" tracks, which will have been introduced to the public exactly one year ago that day.

Sancha (and her sister) went on holiday to Her Majesty's kingdom this autumn. There would have been plentiful opportunity for her to go punting, to perfect her expertise in the subtle art of croquet, to pay respect to T.S. See a pattern ? Well, those last three are matter for an essay that Aaron North of Jubilee found time to pin down in the columns of Buddyhead. ..but sometimes even we have to keep up with them.. so we've been updating a couple things on the site, like the discography, the lyrics page, the band info, etc., that now acknowledge the existence of the "In With The Out Crowd" single and the summer and autumn live shows. Also, we haven't forgotten about the videos we promised.. so "Bayonet" at the Meeting of the Minds, and "Those Poor Devils" at the El Rey should be finished in a while, at our half-defunct laptop's pleasure. And we are still on these interviews, which are currently being transcribed. On top of that, there's a bunch of documents of historical interest, that were generously entrusted to our hands for sharing purposes, and which we'll scan and put up as soon as we're finally back home. In other words, there's lots to keep your hearts warm during the cold dark days to come all winterlong.

Everyone knew it was a special night. Some had come to see the freshly reunited Shudder to Think, tonight's headliners, but quite a significant number were here at the glamorous El Rey Theatre to witness the big home premiere of Jubilee. Today was the Día de los Muertos, the day of the dead and the same crystal chandeliers had been shimmering on ghouls and creeps celebrating the "Night of the Vampire" with Roky Erickson and the Black Angels just a day before.

Jubilee kicked off their full length set with Jeff's eerie, atmospheric guitar lines in "I Don't Have An Excuse", followed by the raw and syncopated "Smoke And Mirrors". For the first time in Jubilee's history Mike played neither his Fender P-bass nor the Gibson Ripper, but opted for a semi-hollow by Epiphone instead, maybe he was going for more feedback, maybe his gear was stowed away somewhere after the "secret" QOTSA/Foo Fighters gig that had taken place at the Avalon just 3 days before ? Anyway, the new bass looked majestic and sounded maybe a bit more mellow.

The stage of the El Rey is a lot bigger than most of the one's Jubilee played in the U.K. earlier this year - needless to say the sound and lights were flawless - but conquering and filling the stage came easy to the guys. Songs like "Rebel Hiss", "In With The Out Crowd" and later "Fuzz Are Down" were apparently widely known and
there was a lot of singing along, clapping and cheers of "Shit Yeah !" and "Pretty good, pretty good !" (hi, Trevor, by the way.) Aaron brought out yet another Hagstrom Viking for "The Fool On The Pill" (or so it seemed, but it could have been the lights) and this time all effects including the Fulltone tape delay worked without problems, allowing him to surf his guitar lines in all emotional pensive smoothness.

Other great guitar moments were "Bayonet" and "Those Poor Devils" - did we mention the black Jazzmaster is back ? Troy shone brightest with some of the more pounding and tribal rhythms like "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows", the only downside of the stage setting was that he was fairly far to the back. "Those Poor Devils" was for us the highlight of the day, with Jubilee catching a magic flow, and filling the venue with the most compelling tones. The way it rollercoasters from the folky strumming and the innocent backing vocals into sinister blues ( for those who still haven't heard it..imagine a fusion of QOTSA's "God is in the radio" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" and you've got the vibe) into the primal beats and howls is always just great, but tonight really felt special.. luckily we filmed it and as soon as it's edited we'll put it up here (same with "Bayonet" in Chino btw, that had its full edit eaten by our computer TWICE.). "Those Poor Devils" slid seamlessly into "Fuzz Are Down", everyone gave their last drops of sweat and used their last oxygen and then it was over.. no mass destruction of gear today - unless it all happened behind the curtain ?

All in all there was quite a bit of pressure on this gig, the big L.A. debut, but helped by a great venue and sound, and a lot of enthusiasm and support from fans, friends and family, Jubilee made it all work just like a charm. The crew of the venue itself videotaped the whole gig, so with some luck that footage might appear, too. Keep your fingers crossed and your eyes peeled..

And on the eighth day, God made the transatlantic flight, and he saw that it was good..

..so while Troy was already djing the Golden Palms Plaza in Chino, we were still stuck at the bagage carousel in LAX, but soon we arrived at the Meeting of the Minds Festival, where Jubilee were slated to play their first ever gig on american ground later in the night. The festival organizers did a killer job, setting up a professional stage an excellent sound system, fancy lighting, and a psychedelic backdrop in the courtyard of what by daytime is just another pleasant southern californian shopping mall. We just made it on time for Earthless' heavy, black sabbathy stoner jams and Casket Salesmen equally trippy but more melodic tunes - it was the last gig of the festival organizers' own band.

Jubilee were scheduled to hit the stage at 9PM, but ran into technical issues during setup, causing a delay, and it just goes to show how cool the event was for no silly curfew restrictions to shorten the setlist. So their set finally began under a warm starlit sky with "I Don't Have An Excuse" all bandmembers determined to kick ass against the technical odds. We're not saying that it wasn't very teasing seeing Aaron's Fulltone-made custom Tube Tape Echo just throning on his amp without ever being brought to life, but the expert use of a simple delay and lush tube distortion didn't leave much to desire in matters of pure sonic thrills.

Even at a festival, it was a full setlist and Jubilee played for a solid hour, with a smooth flow acquired through six weeks of daily pratice in the UK, but also with an enthusiasm refreshed by three weeks of break, and everyone ripped it, the set continuously sparkling with Troy's new and exciting drum fills, Jeff's inspired soundscaping (especially in the more atmospheric tunes like "I Don't Have An Excuse" and "Those Poor Devils".) Mike was ripping and rippling through his bass lines with unabated energy and precision, and anyone who's ever seen Aaron play knows that he's got a way of rising above adversity by playing twice as hard and twice as intense - making us even fear for the stage structure during "Rebel Hiss"

One of the songs that stuck out most for us is "Make You Crumble", driven and explosive like seldom, and "The Fool On The Pill",for which Aaron brought out a new Hagstrom Viking, that we don't think we ever saw in action, and whose shimmering semi-hollow tones was very beautifully complementing Mike's sweet vocals.

Before the usual finale of "Fuzz Are Down",Jubilee got into "Those Poor Devils", which finally found the home it had been missing in the UK, with its bluesy doom and southwestern vibe.. we were saying The Doors' "The Unknown Soldier" but Troy was pointing out "My Wild Love" and he's entirely right. Especially when it slides into a tribal chant where you can literally hear the lost souls screaming from beyond.

Radio Live Transmission - Jubilee on KXLU, october 24

So.. in case you didn't tune in on time for Jubilee's radio show on KXLU this afternoon (trying to talk local, cause here in Rome it's the middle of the night) there's still hope for you in this cruel evil world, and here's what you missed out on.. First Mike introduced the whole Meeting Of The Minds thing, said a couple words about the UK tour and the new single, and after some more sounchecking and setting up Jubilee started their live "set" of "I Don't Have An Excuse" and "Those Poor Devils" - which got interrupted about 1/4 from the end because they were running out of time. Also, the radio station's limiter/compressor/whatever hates feedback and seems to consider a lot of musical sounds as noise, so there are a few very unpleasant unevennesses in the transmission, apparently there were some monitor problems too.. Anyway, it's all been recorded and should be posted sooner or later here, so keep your ears pricked.

A promise and a threat : Live videos..Jubilee's "Mannequin" in Inverness

Maybe you remember how we wrote a while ago about the Inverness gig, and how Jubilee brought the Raigmore Motel to boiling point ? After nearly two weeks spent trying to clear sky high piles of dirty laundry and even dirtier paperwork, we're starting to get a grip on our lives again, but more importantly, we've reached to the bottoms of our suitcases where the hard drives were hidden. We scanned around a bit, and we've fished some photos of Jubilee playing the Londonderry Nerve Centre, one of the gigs at the very far end of the tour. And yeah, we're pretty sure it was a former psychiatric ward indeed. So.. enjoy the rest of the batch, there's lots more to come as we'll wind our way backwards in time.

Jubilee on : L.A. shows, radio appearances, 7-inch, raffle tickets, and interior design

Some more Jubilee news just hit the pages of myspace in one of their quarteryearly state-of-affairs, "the past, the present, the future" adresses to the Jubilee nation.

It was getting increasingly hard to hide it from the public eye.. so now even Jubilee themselves admit to playing two home shows in the upcoming weeks, by headlining the Meeting of the Minds Festival in Chino on october 24, and then by opening for Shudder to Think at the El Rey on november 1st. All of this preceded by a radio live transmission of theirs on the L.A. radio KXLU on october 24 at 5PM.

Another item that was increasingly hard to hide from the public is the "In With The Out Crowd" 7-inch vinyl, that was supposed to be on sale somewhere in the UK back in august or september. But now, it’s on the shelves of Amoeba on Sunset Boulevard, if you enter, walk straight, pass the information desk, turn sharp right and then again sharp right..and here’s a little corner, where the vinyls usually are. Unless they reorganised the place.. in which case, whatever, just follow the signs. If you live in the UK, continental Europe or any of these other terrae incognitae places.. sucks for you. Or maybe you can write
them nice folks and maybe you'll get lucky ?

Aside from Amoeba, the In With The Out Crowd 7-inch will be on sale at both aforementioned shows, together with a small bunch of Rebel Hiss 7-inch, the In With The Out Crowd EP/single CD, and tickets for a raffle giving you the chance to win thousands of unopened BH releases. As for what you'd do with your prize.. Buddyhead decided to broaden the brand spectrum, and is now boldly stepping into field of the interior design and home decor. Motorway 4 revisited

Hard to believe we're still alive, since last time we wrote was about the Inverness gig, way back in August, an eternity ago, and almost in a different world.

In the meantime, we're several hundreds of bad burgers, coffees, and lemsip satchets older.. BUT we're also thousands of megabytes richer. Pictures, videos from concerts all through the isles , interviews of everyone involved, what could be shared of the Jubilee UK summer tour, we're bringing it all back home, and it'll be all here for your pleasure in the next days and weeks.

So be prepared, and drop by now and then.. Not wanting to jinx it, but we think you will like what you'll hear and see.

Inverness, Raigmore Motel, 26th of august

There's a city called Inverness, maybe, somewhere.. we won't see any of it though, because tonight's venue is somewhere in the woods of the no man's land at the edge of town, on a roundabout of the northern end of the world, where it doesn't ever stop drizzling for the twenty hours of our stay. And it actually is a motel, with grim rooms surrounding the hotel bar, that gets turned into a venue by the addition of a stage and a sound and light system. And nothing much ever happens in Inverness either it seems, by what the locals say, save for a few ripples in the surface of a lake nearby, that can be interpreted, or not, as the rise of a giant water snake from antediluvian times..

Against this desolate backdrop, Jubilee turns the club as boiling and bright as the core of a volcano just before eruption : all is fine, the sound good, the band tight, the set seamlessly flowing, but most of all, the overflow of energy and life coming from the stage is intoxicating to the crowd who lovesevery second of it, and so do we. It's hard to point out special moments in the set, just because everything is so strong and consistent.. or maybe "Mannequin", where Aaron, freed from vocal duties for most of the song goes swirling in unleashed abandon, and his soaring lead guitar lines draw the audience into their vortex. And "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows" : a spellbinding and cathartic experience, that leaves tonight's shaman out of breath but triumphing.

Later, the energy is still flowing, with the instruments sizzling on the floor, and Troy's cymbals spinning on their own as in perpetual motion while the band leaves the stage and gets engulfed into a tide of mesmerized and thankful kids, begging the band to come back, because they just had the one good day of the year in Inverness(*).

(*) : Apart from the two petty bastards who stole t-shirts and cds from the merch table after threatening Travis : you two morons are going to burn in hell for a very long time.

(**) : Rebel hiss got drop tuned by a half-step tonight. Wouldn't have been able to phinpoint it as it was appening, but it gives the song more impetus, revealing in it a more mature character, less bratty and also more adequate to the spirit of the song. And it goes well too with Jeff's take on the lead motive, very far from Evan's light-footed prettiness. Now, more edgy and distorted, they've got a new depth, complexity and seriousness.

If you live near Bradford, then august 31st is your lucky day : in a last minute arrangement, Jubilee has been asked to play the Bingley Music Festival, and since they're nice guys, they agreed to do it. And you know how the saying goes that the best things in life come for free ? Well, so does this one (although if you want to see the Happy Mondays or Terrorvision on saturday, you'll still have to pay £12.50.)

Soo.. 3:30 PM, and there's only one stage. You don't have any excuse now.

Turn my head into sound - Jubilee gig in Aberdeen, august 25 2008, Cafe Drummond

You know a concert is great when you lose all sense of time, or location, or any train of thought that might have been running through your head before.. those evenings when the whole is more than the sum of its parts, and where each single song would be enough to make your day already ? They might not be the most technically fulfilling for the performers, but something magical and compelling is happening for the audience.. well the Aberdeen gig was one of these.

Jubilee started the set with a real surprise, a near-impromptu version of "I Don't Have An Excuse, I Just Need A Little Help", much less artificial and much more hypnotizing than the recorded one, all in slow blues lines coiling around a sinister drone and gradually building up for the final explosion.. imagine Spacemen 3 tackling The Raconteurs' "Store Bought Bones", and conjuring vengeful spirits from the outer dimensions. And it was an immense relief to finally hear Aaron's guitar coming through as strong as it deserves, and being on par volume-wise with the rest of the band, interplaying with Jeff's and Mike's intricate lines in the most dazzling ways.

Tonight was also the first time Jubilee were able to play all the songs they had planned, and neither "The Greatest Story Never Told" nor "The Fool On The Pill" were abandoned, this last one returning to its laid-back chill glow; and without any curfew issues on the horizon, all the songs had the time and space to develop and take on a life by themselves, which was especially perceptible with the somewhat slower "Make You Crumble" and "The Greatest Story.." (if you were wondering about the fate of Jeff's sleighbells in january, they've been reincarnated in the shape of a micro-tambourine mounted on Troy's hi-hat.) ..Which in contrast led the fast songs like "Mannequin" to shine even more energetic and intense, and accelerated "Fuzz Are Down" into a breathless joyride through hell, with Jeff playing himself into such a frenzy he was literally hitting the ceiling, Troy drumming the ride cymbal into the ground, and Aaron toppling his cab over in a final assault of feedback.

Everyday is like a sunday - Jubilee in Dundee, august 24 2008, Fat Sam's

Dundee on a sunday night is dead, dead as.. dead. The only place with some life to it was Fat Sam's, a three-venues-in-one structure in a retrofitted industrial building. Missed the first support band The Boy Orchestra because of an overly long waiting time for our atrocious chicken döners, but at least caught most of Descartes' set - very early U2 or Interpol-like, really enjoyable, very sweet guys, and not a bad pairing with Jubilee, given their striking bass lines and their two guitar attack.

Jubilee hit the stage later than planned, due to road/car troubles. So, no soundcheck proper either; and on top of that, a weird stage geometry, a pretty muddy sound, with all sorts of echoes bouncing back from everywhere, and Aaron's amp way low and way back. Sonically all of that didn't do Jubilee justice, by blurring away a lot of the complexity and taking away the songs direction.

The order of the set was very surprising though (in a good way) with the usual closer turning into the opener, lots of fresh transitions, and with the return of "The Fool On The Pill" : Evan's acoustic is replaced by Jeff's semi-hollow, and Troy's heavier drumming style turns the original breezy vibe of the song into something disturbingly forceful. It was feeling good being treated to a full set today, after the very short ones of the festivals, even if "The Greatest Story Never Told" got dropped, Jubilee's playing time colliding with the venue's curfew. One of the set's highlights
was "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows" - Aaron climbing and rolling about while hollering, and never once tripping over the increasingly tangled bunch of cables on stage.

If only - Jubilee plays Leeds festival

Same ungodly hour, same stage, different place.

Leeds festival is like the slightly unkempt and unruly kid brother of Reading. But What no one seems to know (or speak out loud) is that bands play wayyyyyy superior in Leeds - at least all the ones we ever saw. Maybe it's something about the music press attention around London that's paralyzing, maybe it's the sheer size of the event that kills any sort of vibe.. Anyway, Jubilee was set to make no exception, and entered the stage as if they were going for the kill, and "Smoke And Mirrors" slapped the crowd awake, and very enjoyably so. The song choice was the same as in Reading, save for "Bayonet", that got canned for technical reasons, voltage problems, power surges, etc., that soon started to set in. A crying shame, Aaron's playing looked as if it had sounded great if only one could have heard him (he was barely audible even in between the interruptions) and everyone was ripping it.

But now the marathon's over, and Scotland's coming next. Loch Ness, thistles, bagpipes, proper clubs, a chance for the band to soundcheck, and longer setlists..

(and hopefully for us, the possibility to write slightly more extensive reviews, post pictures, etc.)

1:35 in the afternoon - Jubilee at Reading festival

In Reading everything is huge.. The queues to get in, the grounds you need to run around to make it where you want to be, even the smaller tents and the distance between the audience and the stage..

Sometimes there are eternities of 45 minutes that leave a deep impression, as Jubilee proved yesterday, but today the half hour of the festival set was gone in an eyeblink.. Maybe early hours and broad daylight don't go well with rock'n'roll. And yet : Jubilee played really solid, and made the best of it; the crowd, pretty dense in a quite packed tent, dug it.

The setlist of seven songs, already extending over the allotted time, started with the new one, "Smoke And Mirrors (really growing on us, even at the second listen) then went through the current single "In With The Out Crowd", then carried on with "Make You Crumble", "Mannequin"and "Bayonet", to finish with "Rebel Hiss" and "Fuzz Are Down."

And in less than seven hours, Mike hits the big stage with the Queens.. Just got aware that makes five gigs in three city in less than 48 hours.. quite a warm up for the tour - pretty sure even Black Flag never did that..

The world wouldn't listen - Jubilee in Cardiff

and missed out tonight in Cardiff in the most ridiculous way. The gig started with a huge delay, after three support bands, and Jubilee took the stage somewhat abruptly at about quarter to midnight. They played a short, but incredibly powerful set of ten songs.

More about the detail of each song later, but the succession of "Bayonet" after "Make You Crumble" is just mindblowing, and the most introspective songs ("Make You Crumble", "The Greatest Story..") now have a drive to themselves they never found in january.

Today was the first time Jubilee played live with Jeff Lynn on lead guitar and Troy "Boy" Petrey on drums - who'd deserve to be called rather Troy "The Man" Petrey so much he nailed everything, even if it doesn't rhyme as nicely. Jubilee, as we saw them tonight, was incomparably more physical than in the past, throwing themselves into every song without any reserve, and rhytmically stronger - but most of all the emotional intensity of it was impossible to resist. Hard to believe that the guys on stage were jetlagged, with a day of technical struggles behind themselves. And now, they'll be playing Reading Festival in hardly eleven hours..

If you want to storm and ransack a location in Dundee on the 24th of august - please do so, but make it Fat Sam's not the Westport Bar...at least if you want to hear Jubilee play.
The change in location we had hinted at was confirmed by several sources in charge of selling tickets for the event - Grouchos, if you want to get them in person, or Ticketweb and Aloud, if you want to order online. The promoter as well as the venues in question have been struck with cases of severe muteness.

edit: now Fat Sam's confirm the relocation of the gig as well !

But if it happens to be Leeds or Reading festival you plan to plunder and raid - then you'll have to rise and shine early, cause Jubilee's on at 01:30 pm, yep that's the one just after noon, not the one just after midnight (which would be soooooo much more apropriate).

The first gig of the upcoming tour is less than one week away.. and now tickets can be found for all the dates of the tour. All ? Almost -links for possible ticketers have been posted here.

As for the missing ones, we've been looking around and contacting the remaining venues, to find out what the deal was, and got the following information :

2008 08 24 Dundee Wesport Bar : £6, supposedly from Groucho's, or probably off the counter if you live in Dundee.

2008 08 30 Middlesbrough Empire : tickets at the door, £6. If you want to be on the safe side, you can mail them to be on the "paying guest list".

2008 09 21 Exeter Cavern : still no reply; £6 according to ents24; £4 according to the Cavern site

2008 09 24 London Metro Club : £8 according to ents24.

2008 10 02 Derry, Nerve Centre : not on sale yet, but £6 according to ents24.

Imagine you just had twenty minutes of lush pink noise poured into your ears, the same field where you were standing on exactly one year ago is emptying, the stage is clearing, and you get a long-distance message from the Windy City :

I heard the local alternative radio station (Q101) speaking glowingly about Jubilee. Saying that you have to check these guys out, giving the band members resumes of other bands they had been in and the names of collaborators. Won't play their music, just direct you to check them out.
They were advising people to go to jubilee.la for more information on the band and to listen to some of their songs. No contest that I know of yet. I think that they are trying to see if they are what people want to hear before they start playing them.

The once-added, removed, re-added, re-removed date for London at the Metro seems to be on again, at least according to these guys.

Also, Les Gars (aka The Blokes, The Dudes, The Lads, if your french is rusty) are doing the whole of the Jubilee tour from Glasgow on.. so far they were only announced for a few dates, and we were about to post about them together with Red Snowman, Working Class Heroes, Yeltzin and a couple others.. but looked like they needed their own post now.

Who Bet Entwistle Leeds Bus Quick Coming Magic - Jubilee's second e.p./ single tracklisting complete

While waking up today we got aware, that we lost a bet yesterday (but won another one privately, when the "new" drummer got mentioned) – namely when the title of the Who cover, featured on the b-side of Jubilee’s In With The Out Crowd 7-inch got revealed . With the clues hinting at the Jubilee track having been "recorded on valentines day" just like The Who’s Live At Leeds in 1970, we had wrongly assumed it would actually be one OF the tracks of Live At Leeds (well the remastered and deluxe edition anyway) and placed our bet on "A Quick One, While He’s Away." Turns out it’s "Someone’s coming". Which is almost as suggestive a title if you ask us.
In strange ways we were not even that far off with "A Quick One..", because this album was the first one ever to feature a song written by John Entwistle and "Someone’s Coming" IS written by John Entwistle. At the same time "A Quick One.." is a bittersweet tale evolving around Ivor the engine driver (or BUS driver..damn brits), while "Someone’s Coming" was the B-side of the american release of "Magic BUS".
What’s this obsession with busses anyway ? Between the ever returning Ziggy and "Pioneers.." having been written under the influence of MAGIC mycelial vegetation on a BUS ride, does that make it a Magic Bus ? So many questions, so few answers..
By the way, for those of you who always thought too that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was a little too heavy on the multiple voices/operatic side, it’s probably a blessing, that it’s NOT "A Quick One.." they covered. Would have been quite straining on the vocal chords, too. Then again "Someone's Coming" has the horn section..

The guy pounding the skins for Jubilee during the upcoming tour will be longtime friend, collaborator and contributor (and former drummer of The Icarus Line) Troy "Boy" Petrey, as announced via Jubilee's myspace today. Speaking of former members and "ex-members" - Jubilee seem to be at least as bugged with the phrase "ex-member", as we are with the phrase "fan site" in regard to our little thingy project here (www.isolatebythehour.com). But since we had to rewrite, revise and recode some of the band info anyhow to reflect these big news, we added a little intro, that hopefully correctly explains the complex entity that is Jubilee, watch here.

Just wanted to let you all know that Jubilee have announced a whole bunch of tour dates for a very extended stay in the UK and Ireland. We're all really excited to "jump the pond", get back on the wrong side of the road and start rockin' again. Can't wait to see you all again...

Before we take off the band is finishing up their full length debut album, I'm finishing up the artwork for it, the "in With The Out Crowd" single is being pressed as a CD maxi-single/7-inch and we're all stocking up on underwear, socks and other tour supplies. You can never have enough underwear and socks on tour!

Once again, I will be tour managing, taking photos, film making, selling merch, wearing as many hats as I can and being the most responsible person on the tour (scary right?). According to Topspin's announcement here the Jubilee debut album should be out sometime before october 2008. (This gives a more precise meaning to Aaron North's phrase on Jubilee's myspace of "before you need to wear a coat outside"..or an insight into his temperature expectations for early autumn.)

Also, our friends Jubilee released a new single and video while I was away (both free to anyone who bought the $20 package, of course), just a couple weeks ahead of their European tour and less than two months ahead of the full-length album, which is nearly finished but needs mixing and mastering (and will also be included in the $20 price tag). Travis and Aaron have been by the office regularly playing bits and pieces of it and it’s incredible.

Aberdeen calling

Quite update on the august 25/26 issue : first, the Cafe Drummonds, that SeeTickets used to situate in London, has been relocated to its real abode in Aberdeen. Which, as we were writing a couple days ago, led to some rescheduling : Jubilee will play Aberdeen on 08/25 and Inverness on 08/26 (as opposed to the original 08/25 date for Inverness.)

The currently published tour planning has been updated there.

At this point in time, and in case you bought tickets for either of the gigs before they got updated, we have no clue about SeeTickets policy when concerts are not cancelled, but "only" shifted through time and space in fanciful ways.

Goin underground, goin underground...Jubilee play Metro

The place is Oxford Street, the club's called the Metro and the promoter goes by the name Blow up...and if you listen closely there's a faint echo of the Yardbirds in the air...Jubilee play it on the 24th of september 2008. In theory tickets should be available here.

Update : there's a glitch on the ticketer site, which at the end of the buying process kindly informs you of some availability problem. Phone operators aren't able to go through either and they suggest to "keep on trying" since the tickets aren't on sale with them yet.

Update 2: Now, the date got removed from the ticketers listing and the venue doesn't confirm it - yet ? - either..probabaly things are gonna get straightened out soonish. No news for Exeter or Middlesbrough either, btw...BUT the sales for the other, other London date, Manchester and Yeovil started.

- According to an announcement yesterday, Jubilee should play the Metropolis night hosted at the Empire in Middlesbrough on august 30.

- We just got confirmation that the Cafe Drummond Jubilee is scheduled to play on august 26 (and which was located by SeeTickets in London) is actually the Cafe Drummonds in Aberdeen. Problem is they're booked already on the 26th, and that some time-space-continuum tweaking will have to take place in the next days before the definitive schedule is set. The blurb on Jubilee's myspace has been updated with a couple hints as to what the near future keeps in store :

Jubilee’s new single, "In With The Out Crowd", and their first single, “Rebel Hiss” are both out now. Well... Actually, only a couple songs from their new single are for sale now as mp3's. The rest of the songs, and the physical formats, will be available by the time the band starts their upcoming UK/Euro tour. The tour kicks off on August 22 at the Reading Festival, and ends about a month and a half later. Their debut album will be released sometime this year before you'll hafta start wearing a coat outside.

So.. given that the last UK date is currently september 23 in Nottingham, probably two weeks or so on the old continent (unless here "euro" means "in southern Ireland") and some tentative weather-bound forecast as to the album release (but is there ever a point where one needs to wear a coat in L.A. ?)

A batch of new Jubilee dates has appeared today on several UK ticketing sites, and the end of summer is starting to fill up nicely :

"In With The Out Crowd" and "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows" have been uploaded and can now be streamed from Jubilee's myspace.

Another offering of the day : a video teaser to what will be the album version of "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows", where Joey Castillo and Mike Shuman are recording the drums and the bass tracks, with Aaron North behind the recording/mixing desk, and five blurry pixels that would probably be Jeff Lynn..

Also, the name of the fourth track on the EP/cd single has been made public : it will be "Jenny Artichoke", the song by Kaleidoscope, NOT by Kaleidoscope, that was released first as a single, then added as a bonus track ON their album Tangerine Dream, NOT BY the band Tangerine Dream (thank god.) We would also like to take this opportunity to point out as well that the Jubilee we're talking about is Jubilee, NOT Jubilee, and NOT Jubilee either. Thank you for your attention.

Jubilee's appearance at Leeds festival on the 23rd of august and Reading festival on the 22nd of august have been officially confirmed on Jubilee's myspace. Jubilee will play the "Festival Republic Stage", both days at 2pm...everyone'd better set their alarm clocks.

More tour dates are to follow shortly.

Frequency Festival as well as Pukkelpop have now both been officially cancelled.

Jubilee do Leeds and Reading !

The good news...Jubilee were among the bands added to the final line-up of this year's Leeds and Reading festival. They're supposed to play the "Festival Republic Stage" - so far it's unclear on which day they're going to play where, though. If Michael Shuman gets to play two sets per day (since QOTSA are one of the headliners), it could be Reading on friday the 22nd and Leeds on saturday the 23rd of august.
The bad news...weekend tickets (at 155£) as well as day tickets (65£) for both festivals have sold out ages ago. Good luck with the scalpers !

Pukkelpop cancelled

Jubilee's gig scheduled for the 14th of august at the Pukkelpop festival will not take place. Their name was removed from the festival's line-up page.
Most probably this is related to the celebration in Natasha Shneider's honour taking place on the 16th of august at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. QOTSA and many guests will be performing at this benefit concert.

In the light of these events the Jubilee performance at the Frequency Festival the same weekend, will most likely not take place either.

Natasha Shneider - musician (Eleven and QOTSA), actress and music producer (Wires on Fire's debut album) passed away yesterday:

On July 2nd, at 11:11 AM, Natasha Shneider passed away. She ended her time in this Life with the style & poetry that she lived all the days previous, crossing over while held in the arms of her closest & dearest. No words can encapsulate the unwaivering strength she provided, adversities she overcome, the talents she possessed & nutured, the sharpness of her wit nor the beautiful complexity of her intellect. We are so thankful for her influence & the gift of her friendship.

A celebration of Natasha Shneider will be held in Hollywood at the Henry Fonda Theatre on Saturday, Aug 16th. Further details will be released shortly. Some light got cast today on the elusive schedule of the Duchess York and their mysterious might-or-not-or-might-maybe list of possible acts, that has been filing Jubilee under the "stuff that might happen" category for a few weeks now :

"OK, so this list is always a work in progress, alright?

Nobody's saying these bands are definitely booked in; we've maybe had a bit of conversation with the agent or got a tentative date pencilled.

These things can work in mysterious ways so please don't be mailing any acts saying, "Whoooo - you're coming to The Duchess! Fantastic, when is it!"

Details about the In with the out crowd single

Some details concerning the content and the somewhat enhanced recording circumstances of the upcoming single In with the out crowd surfaced as well....are they ever sober at work ? Anyway, the tracklist of the cd/e.p. goes as follows: In with the out crowd, Pioneers get shot with arrows, a Kaleidoscope cover and a song called I don't have an excuse, I just need a little help. The 7" vinyl release of the single will feature a Who cover on the b-side - of a song mysteriously hinted at as having been recorded on valentines day, just as its original on Live at Leeds. Our guess is...A quick one, while he's away. Hah !

The next promoters adding Jubilee to their festival line-up are the guys from Pukkelpop Festival. The event takes place from the 14th to the 16th of august 2008 in a place called Hasselt, Belgium. Jubilee are scheduled to play the thursday the 14th, the same day Henry Rollins will be doing his spoken word thing. The next day you can set James Hetfield on fire, if you can break through security and make it all the way onto the main stage...

This date has not been confirmed by Jubilee yet.

York...definitely only maybe

Another announcement floating around out there...Jubilee MIGHT, only MIGHT play a club called York - The Duchess York in, yes...York. This thing is purely speculative and neither confirmed by the promoters themselves nor by Jubilee. But since York is close to Leeds and since Leeds and Reading take place one week after the Frequency Festival, well one thing might lead to another...

Jubilee appear in the line-up announcements of this year's Frequency Festival, taking place near Salzburg, Austria from the 14th to the 16th of august 2008. They are to play the Race Stage (which is pretty much the main stage), the exact date and time is unknown so far. This date has not been officially confirmed by Jubilee headquarters yet.

Jubilee are currently working on their second single and on their debut album. The recording (under guidance of master mechanic Michael Harris, in his legendary blue suit) is taking place at their own generous, purpose-built, high tech studio facility Shabbey Road, located in the lush countryside of North Hollywood. Shabbey Road is not only famous for its location, but also for its acoustics - it can accomodate a 110-piece orchestra and 100-piece choir simultaneously.
